population estimate - calculation

The estimates for the population of Cottingham in 2001 are worked out as follows:

Method 1:

We know there are 372 households in Cottingham (from 2001 electoral roll), and 605 in rural west ward (from 2001 Census). This means that 61.5% of the houses in rural west ward are in Cottingham. 61.5% of the total population for rural west ward (1,510) = 892 people

Method 2:

We know there are 372 households in Cottingham (from 2001 electoral roll) and that the average household size in rural west ward is 2.4 people. 372 x 2.4 = 928 people.

The estimated population figure of 910 is half way between the two. Not entirely scientific, but should give us a fair estimate!
